Auto dealership Google Business Profiles can be complicated. For most, they operate the sales, service, parts, collision centres, and other departments under the same roof.
When operating several departments from the same address and under one roof, it isn’t unusual for dealerships to have separate profiles representing the different parts of their business. But there are specific rules around how departments within a single location can be represented on Google.
For this client, a New York Tesla dealership, their main Google Business Profile was suspended along with more than 1,000 legitimate customer reviews for deceptive content.
The hard suspension disappeared the dealership from Google Maps and put years of accumulated reputation, customer reviews, and local visibility at risk.
The Google Business Profile Suspension Audit:
When a dealership operates multiple profiles from the same physical location, the first step is understanding whether those profiles meet Google’s requirements for separate departments.
In this case, the dealership had three Google Business Profiles operating from the same location:
- The main dealership
- The Service Department
- The Parts Department
Operationally, this made sense. The dealership genuinely had separate sales, service, and parts functions.
The problem was the way these departments had been represented through Google Business Profiles did not properly align with Google’s guidelines for departments operating within a single location.
This created signals that Google’s automated content moderation system could interpret as deceptive, duplicate, or misleading.
The Problem:
The dealership’s three profiles were essentially competing for representation of the same physical location without meeting the requirements Google uses to distinguish a legitimate department from a separate business.
While having dedicated service and parts operations isn’t unusual in the automotive industry, Google doesn’t automatically treat every department within a dealership as an independently eligible business profile.
The dealership also selected the wrong Primary categories for each of their departments, essentially pitting all 3 profiles against each other. The result was a serious problem for the dealership both in terms of visibility, in-house competition, as well as misrepresentation on Google Maps.
The Fix:
Google suspended the main dealership profile, taking the profile with more than 1,000 real customer reviews offline. This meant the dealership wasn’t simply dealing with a profile configuration issue; it was potentially dealing with the loss of a significant piece of its online reputation and local search presence.
Map Mech’s Google Business Profile Specialists conducted a detailed audit of the dealership’s profiles, their relationship to the physical location, and how each department was being represented on Google.
The priority was to identify the underlying structural issue rather than simply submitting an appeal and hoping Google would reverse the suspension.
We reviewed the relationship between the dealership, its service department, and its parts department, fixed the category issue, aligned on the use of different contact phone numbers, and also established clear guidelines on how each profile was to be managed and represented on Google Maps.
From there, we worked to correct the profile structure and eliminate the signals that had created the deceptive-content concern. Our reinstatement strategy focused on clearly establishing the dealership as the primary business at the location and ensuring that the representation of its departments did not create the appearance of multiple independent businesses occupying the same premises without the required distinction.
The Result:

The dealership’s main Google Business Profile was successfully reinstated.
Most importantly, the dealership was able to recover the profile that represented more than 1,000 legitimate customer reviews. The reinstatement also gave the dealership a cleaner and more compliant foundation for managing its Google presence going forward.
Follow Up & Next Steps Post-Reinstatement:
For a dealership with a substantial review history, reinstatement is only one part of the job. After recovering the profile, our team monitored the listing closely to ensure the corrected setup remained stable and that the dealership’s Google presence accurately reflected its business structure.
We also assessed the profile’s local search performance and the potential impact of the suspension on its visibility, created a strategy to restore the dealership to its pre-suspension competitive state, and managed their online ranking to ensure continued visibility and revenue.
With this client, the goal was to recover the dealership’s legitimate Google presence while creating a structure that was less likely to trigger a future suspension.
