So your Google Business Profile (GBP) has been suspended? Naturally, you’re panicky and want to get it back online as soon as possible. Then Google invites you to submit an appeal, but what documents should you present to strengthen your case and prove legitimacy?
Documents you need to Appeal a Google Business Profile Suspension
The wrong documents can do more damage and lead to a denied Google Business Profile reinstatement appeal. So what should you present?
1. Business Registration Documents
Your business registration documents, like a business license, Doing Business As (DBA), incorporation filing, tax document, IRS or EIN request, and more, are important to prove to Google’s GBP suspension and reinstatement team that your business is real and legitimate.
If your business is a brick-and-mortar listing with a physical address, confirm that the address on these documents matches the address showing up in search. If not, you may need to present additional documents that prove you are legally allowed to operate and do business in the location/address you have listed on Google Maps.
A Doing Business As (DBA) is recommended if your business name on paper is different from what you’ve listed in search. A business name mismatch can trigger an appeal rejection.
2. Tax & Insurance Documents
Your tax filing for the previous year and a valid Certificate of Insurance (COI) can also prove business presence and legitimacy.
When presenting these documents, it’s important to ensure that the business name and address matches with the business profile. If your business is a Service Area Business (SAB) with no address listed, you only have to ensure a business name match!
3. Lease Document
Suspended businesses with a physical address listed on Google Maps may also need a copy of their lease agreements to prove access to the address listed physically.
Please note that Google needs all pages of your lease, not just the first page. It is important to provide as accurate information as possible to ensure your business profile is reinstated within the shortest possible time.
4. Recent Utility Bill (Ideally within the last 3 months)
A recent utility bill (electricity or water bill, phone bill, internet service provider bill, waste management bill, or others) dated within the last 3 months can also provide additional proof that your business is legitimate and operates from the area or address you claimed on Google Maps.
Before presenting a utility bill as part of your appeal process, ensure that the business name and address (this only matters if you have a physical address showing on your suspended listing) match that on your suspended profile.
5. Additional Documentation
To further strengthen your Google Business Profile suspension appeal, you may also include additional documentation like:
- Storefront photos showing exterior signage, front entrance, reception area, branded interior, and more.
- Tools & Equipment photos showing your work tools, branded trucks and vehicles, etc.
- Uniforms and staff photos on the job (accepted for certain business types, including cleaning services) but only as supporting documents.
What Does Google’s Appeal Team Look For During A Reinstatement Appeal?
During the appeal process, Google’s local listing reinstatement team looks specifically at these core areas to prove your business is legitimate and is represented correctly on Google Maps and in search:
- Documented proof of business ownership
- Business name match
- Commercial address match (important if you have a physical address listed)
- Phone number match
- Website access
- Business type/service area.
The more consistent these details are, the easier it is for a reviewer to understand what business the documents represent.
